You know, society tries to convince us that people need be put in their proper place. "If you look like this, then you should be doing that..." But, you can't ignore the simple things.
I don't care what corner of the world you lived in. Guys did certain things when they were teenagers... things we'd rather not tell our female counterparts.
Yeah, I don't care if you're White, Asian, Black or whatever... you're not a man until you've flung your underwear in the air with your foot and tossed it in the corner of your room at some point in your life.
I could tell you right now that there's an Israeli kid overseas downloading hip-hop tracks when he should be doing his homework.
There's also a Black teenager in Boston listening to Black Flag, shaking her head like she's trying to rip it off of her neck. No... don't worry, that's how you know it's good.
I bet you didn't know this about Black people. Where are my Africans, African Americans, West Indian, Black English people? Let me ask you all a question. Haven't you ever wondered just how it was that whenever a Kenny G record came on ...we always knew the how the song went? If I were to put "Breathless" in the Jukebox, 9 out of 10 of us would be humming right along.
See, guys like Kenny G, Phil Collins... they graced the CD library of our parents and we (as Black people) have inherited it.
What's the point? The point is that no matter how hard we try to fit into the mold society has so desperately has crafted for us, we're all going to be drawn together. It's natural. Race, amongst other things, is not natural. It's something that's been manufactured, but it doesn't make it imaginary. Not really. The effects are real.
Sooner or later, it's going to dissolve. We have a lot more in common than we ourselves would like to believe sometimes. I do think it's going to be later though. Much later. See these guys in the video? Remember what I was talking about? If you don't get the connection, ask me...
8 OF YOUR THOUGHTS PRESSED:
Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight". They sounded beautiful and the twist they put on the song was real nice.
Some people were a bit reluctant to get into the groove of things, initially, but it was uncontrollable because it's such a natural process to "feel" it.
Music is food for the soul, and is often bridges the gap between different cultures of people. It is definitely the one thing we all have in common.
Beautiful video. I agree with your post. We do have alot more in common than we'd like to think or than we were thought to think. My mom loves Phil Collins, my sis adores U2 and so do I. It's sad when even some Black people would say that my musical taste or even the way I speak is "not black enough" Oh well...here's to change!
my friend completely agrees with the underwear situation! lol
Lovely afternoons to Traci Lavette, Retromus-ik, and Aretha Forrest.
Music is like fire. Even children have no choice but to react to it. So, what you said was very poignant Traci...
It's such a natural process to "feel" it. [@ Traci Lavette]
There's nothing wrong with broadening your horizons in terms of learning about different cultures. The world is too vast and exciting to only want to stay in one lane ALL of your life.
--And I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Miss Retro. [@ Retromus-ik]
Haha, I can't explain why it happens... it just does. It's like a natural law or something.
I don't suppose girls did that with their underwear as well, did they? [@ Aretha Forrest]
You had me right up untill you started talking about humming along to Kenny G.
What? C'mon Mike you mean to tell me your parents never listened to Kenny G or Phil Collins? [@ clnmike]
Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry.. gets in your head and never leaves. I couldn't stand Kenny G, but you're right I'd whistle that ish...LOL.
But it's the same on the other side too...Huey Lewis, Journey, John Cougar. Good post.
Haha, yeah... you know music is one of things that you can't really lie to.
By that I mean, people will let their inhibitions go and bop their head if it moves them. Regardless if they like who makes the song or not. [@ E's]
