Progress is like temperature. If you dip your hand into a vat of sub-zero liquid nitrogen, you'll actually end up burning it. See, it's SO cold... that it's really hot. That's kind of like progress.
You can progress so far... that you can end up back at the very beginning.
It seems to me that human beings are there own worst enemies. Take the situation with robots. You've heard of artificial intelligence? It's a big concept, but what it boils down to is giving "inorganic matter" the ability to use logic and reasoning ...kind of like they way we use it. Essentially, giving a lifeless body life.
(Pictured in the upper right corner is HAL 9000 from the cinematic space opera, 2001: A Space Oddessey. In this movie, he's given the ability to use logic, reasoning and emotion for the "good of the mission". He then decides that in order for the mission to be completed, the humans around him must cease to exist. Nice logic, no?)
The issue I have with us is, we don't know when to stop. Whenever I hear that scientists are trying to give robots emotion, or more room for open communication ...I can't help but shake my head at how stupid we are.
It's like, we're giving robots the tools to kill us off. All it takes is one robot to wonder... one robot to have an idea. One robot to ask--
"Well ...why?"

(Pictured above is a robot violinist developed by Toyota. Ah! Nothing like a little classical music while we're being enslaved by mechanical tyrants...)
It doesn't stop at robots though, it's everything. We are obsessed with crossing boundaries. Look at our obsession of space. Didn't it occur to anybody that one of these days, we might find exactly what we're looking for. Another form of life?
Next thing you know, we'll find some super species who find us "bothersome" and kills us off ...maybe keeping a few of us as pets in some kind of intergalactic museum.
Sometimes we have to stop to enjoy the fruits of our labor, instead of trying to leave with the entire tree.
16 OF YOUR THOUGHTS PRESSED:
That's what I was thinking this past weekend. I was watching the History channel as some scientist got all excited to near climax at the idea of being to create tiny black holes on earth. WHAT!?!? Excuse me!?!?!
SmH @ Science sometimes....
wonderful post!!!
love the pic of HAL ahaha.
"I don't think so, Dave."
I feel you 100%! There is ALOT of themes that the media is aggresively pushing out to the world. ROBOTS are one thing; and conditioning people to work extra hard and/or being 'replaced' by a robot or machine.
ex: look at Beyonce and all the other singers pushing the "New Age/Robotic" themes. I mean WHY?
other agendas being pushed: GAY, the Michael Vick/ppl going crazy over animals, the robot theme, girls acting like boys and boys being effimate. Girls shaving all or parts of their hair, pedophilia (Disney), and the "sex" on regular tv resembling PORN. Back in the days there were softcore porn (showing a womans breast, butt) but NOW (and it don't matter what time its on) they're showing private parts and all like its the Playboy channel! WTF?! also easy access for smut via internet. OH! another good one is the politics bullshit going on now. Are we getting the fucking Healthcare public or not? Probably not; too much money being made from behind the scenes to help "the people" FUCK THE PEOPLE they say. They are telling us FUCK YOU with a smile on their face. Hmmm. Doesn't matter what party (dem or repub) its all within the same agenda
Advice to all: DO NOT let these things persuade or change you. Just be careful of the images or music that's being fed to you. Just because its in or trendy does NOT mean you have to participate.
/tanget (my fault lol)
good post :D im glad you're noticing the robot theme. Don't fall for their bullshit.
Very though provoking post...I also get nervous about the cloning craze that had swept the nation...2 much curiousity can indeed kill the cat...
WOW! Soooo true!
Great post!
Warm welcomes to NightFall914, Chanel, thehoustongirl, Cerebrally_Orgasmic, and GL0.
Pfft! Tiny black holes on Earth?? Why?
--Sometimes I think they're trying to have us killed on purpose. What is all of this going to accomplish? [@ NightFall914]
That's a movie everybody should see at least once before they die.
--I hate HAL so much, Chanel... you don't even know. Haha. [@ Chanel]
Damn. Tell them how you REALLY feel!
--And don't get me started on Beyonce. I find her very annoying and a bit destructive with her whole "diva" complex, no offense to anyone who likes her on here. Agreed. [@ thehoustongirl]
Cloning makes me nervous as well, but at least with cloning... I can see how it might be beneficial.
Organ transplants would be easier for one.
Yet, it really isn't worth it. Cloning would bring more problems than solutions... and is one of the ultimate examples of human beings playing "god". [@ Cerebrally_Orgasmic]
Yeah, I know right! Thanks, babe. [@ Gl0]
Great post I agree 100%.
Now this is one thought provoking entry!!
I feel just the same about us...I was just thinking about cloning the other day...so scary, and we don't know the full extent of what's going on in the labs with that, do we?
Some things need to be left as is...as someone said, KISS--Keep It Simple Stupid! I'm all for that when robots are the subject. Look at the drones we have doing the bombing in Iraq, etc. The controllers screw up and kill innocent people sometimes.
Ah, you're good. You got me off my favorite subject here, K. Michel--you know what that is.

I am loving this post!
I've felt the way since forcing myself to watch I, Robot. When will we learn to leave well enough alone?
The moon landings, the robots, the cloning etc. Just stop it!
Technology is great, but let's solve some world wide issues with it, why do we need violin-playing robots? I can't think of one single use for them.
All I need is to come home and have my computer rebelling against me lol.
Lovely afternoons to clnmike, downlow, and ☆Reese✮.
Hey mike, appreciate the props. Anytime.[@ clnmike]
I like that, KISS-Keep It Simple, Stupid! It describes my sentiment quite well.
--And yes! I do know what you're favorite subject is... haha. [@ downlow]
I, Robot! Yeah, that's one of those movies (or books even) people won't think about seriously.
But it's only a matter of time before it goes from a science fiction movie ...to a historical fiction movie.
Long time no see, too, Reese. [@ ☆Reese✮]
While fundamentally I agree, I find your argument has one flaw: how do you program emotion as we know it? I find it impossible to even theoretically break down emotions like fear, hate and love into something simplistic enough that our basic logic programs can understand.
for example: if someone hits the robot, there are 2 logical reactions: anger (why the fuck did you hit me) and fear (holy crap, this person is going to hit me again.) how does the machine determine this? Can they be programed to recognize what is the appropriate response? Probably not, because your fundamental reaction is based on your personal experiences and personality. You can break it down further, but I think you get the point.
And another thing: can you really even think to break down something as fickle and complicated as Love? I can't even begin how to break that shit down into a series of 1s and 0s.
So while we are going to be the agents of our own destruction, it won't be by giving AI human emotions.
Hey Nashi... been a while.
Um, ok.
In Psychology, there are these abstract ideas called "constructs". So, things like "affection", "tolerance", "courage" they would be constructs.
The thing about constructs is, you can't measure them ...not without operationalizing them first. What this means is simple.
Take "affection".
We can't measure "affection"
...but there are certain things that human beings do that associate with "affection". And we could measure those.
-We can measure the "holding of hands"
-"Kissing"
-"Hugging"
And through these "operationalizations", we could measure "affection".
So for emotions like happiness, anger, fear ...even love; we don't have to dowload our emotions to them verbatim. We just embue them with common operationalizations.
As far as the example of hitting the robot. It would do what robots do, analyze and come up with the most productive outcome (as set by its programmers, or through eventual adaptation).
Or it could produce some kind of randomized effect, which I think would happen. This way, no two robots would react the same way to this situation.
Hear hear!!!
Okay, let me begin by saying that this was very thought-provoking. I mean, really. So much so that it took me all this time to respond when I saw it the other day.
I do agree that we are our own worse enemy and that "it's never enough".
What I found very interesting was what you said at the beginning about the nitrogen being "SO cold...that it's really hot" That's deep and could be used as a metaphor for success, itself, and the pursuit of it. I find that some are complacent in life and though they have dreams, some often go untouched from the fear and/or success factor. Using the nitrogen as a metaphor, I would say that we can never really know how it success could feel until it's finally touch it. It's either going to burn, or it's going to remain at a temperature that is not really beneficial.
The thing is to try because, like the nitrogen, you can't simply tell at the sight of it. You have to touch it to know it.
In the case of the robots, these fools have just gotten a taste of success on the wrong level and don't know how to stop. Like you, I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up somewhere being used as pets like in 'Planet of the Apes'.
Til next time,
Traci

Oh stop!
--Wait, why you stopped?? No, that actually means keep it coming. Haha. Thanks for coming through, Tee ...I know you're new around these parts [@ Tee aka The Diva's Thoughts]
I really appreciate this comment, Traci.
You brought in an interesting point. Success really is a balancing act... you can't go too far, but yet you have to go far enough to "finally touch it". It's tough business.
--And Planet of the Apes captures my outer space sentiment exactly! Thank you for that... [@ Traci Lavette]
